Winnipeg is chosen one of the Cultural Capital of Canada for 2010

2010 is going to be an exciting year for Winnipeg and Heartland International English School. This honour means that there will be even more events and activities for students to partake in while in Winnipeg and have a Truly Unique Canadian Experience!

"Winnipeg is renowned for its unique diversity and passion for arts and culture, so to receive this designation as a Cultural Capital of Canada for 2010 is an immense honour," said Mayor Sam Katz. "And I would like to thank the Government of Canada for recognizing our ability to celebrate culture and for its contributions to support arts and culture in Winnipeg in 2010."

Highlights of Winnipeg's proposed 2010 projects:

  • City Stories - the creation of a mobile story-exchange centre where writers, poets, and performance artists will engage Winnipeggers in storytelling.
  • Art and the City: Symposium and Conference - a gathering of international experts to discuss the relationship between art and design and urban planning, with a focus on the environment and sustainability.
  • A Future for Cultural Planning in Winnipeg - 2010 to 2020 - the development of a cultural plan for the next 10 years.
  • River Barge Festival - a seven-day festival in which performances will take place on barges at the Forks, the juncture of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers. It will feature Aboriginal and culturally diverse artists, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Manitoba Theatre Centre, and well-known artists who began their careers in Winnipeg.
  • Arts City North - the creation of a neighbourhood arts centre that will offer high-quality, free-of-charge programs to inner-city youth and families.
  • Cross-cultural Marketing Strategy - marketing incentives to major Winnipeg festivals to develop new local, national and international audiences across cultures.
  • Winnipeg's Arts Ambassadors - the appointment of four artists as ambassadors for a two-year period in music and the literary, visual, and performing arts, to raise the status of these art forms.
  • International Cello Festival - the creation of the first international cello festival which will include a series of public concerts, master classes, young artists recitals, a gala recital, and the creation of a prize to honour Winnipeg-born cellist Zara Nelsova.
  • Public Art Project - commissioning of a public art piece via a national competition.
  • Winnipeg International Aboriginal Exhibition - a large-scale exhibition of Aboriginal art from Canada and around the world.
  • Marketing and Awareness Campaign - the implementation of a campaign, in partnership with Destination Winnipeg and Travel Manitoba, promoting the Cultural Capital of Canada designation among Winnipeggers.

Heartland Students take over the Red River Ex

Since 1952, each year, thousands of Winnippegers flock to the Red River Ex, a mobile amusement fair that runs every summer for 10 days in June. This year, Heartland organized an afternoon for the students at the Ex which stretched into the evening as they were having so much fun. The students were smiling from ear to ear while they were enjoying the rides, games, entertainment and food. As you can see by the pictures below, a great time was had by all.

Julio speaks about his experience at Heartland!

Julio is from Colombia but now living in Mexico, he has been studying here for 6 months and made a positive impression on everyone he has met with his upbeat personality. The other students gravitate towards him and he will be missed by them and all the Heartland Staff. We wish you success in the future Julio and we hope to see you back in Winnipeg soon!

Heartland Sudents having fun after class

Heartland is a fun and relaxing place to learn English which is very apparent in the video below. One of our experience teachers, Jeneen has her class learn a new song every Friday afternoon. This past week it was "Build me up Buttercup" by the Foundations which the students loved so much, they decided to throw in some dance moves! Watch as Heartland students move to some after class grooves!

Heartland Student Testimonial - Daniella from Mexico

Daniela is from Mexico and has studied at Heartland for 6 months. We all enjoyed seeing her smile around the halls and wish her the best as she goes home and starts a new journey with newly acquired English skills. She made many friends here and they all Miss You! Although shy she was more than happy to say a few words about her Heartland experience.

All of us at Heartand wish you continued success Daniela!

Heartland Students cheer the Manitoba Moose to Victory!

Heartland Staff and Students enjoyed a fun activity night out on Friday as close 25 of us went to watch a Manitoba Moose Playoff Hockey game. It was an exciting game which the Manitoba Moose won 2-1 which I am sure was due to all the cheering of the Heartland students (there was a lot)! The diverse group of students really got into the game and with their excitement and energy they got the entire arena to do "The Wave"!

Thanks to all the students who came out and had a wonderful night!

H1N1 flu (Human Swine Flue) virus

bilingual l/head

Heartland International English School is closely monitoring the developments in the international outbreak of H1N1 flu (Human Swine Flue) virus. All students and staff are reminded to follow routine influenza precautions of covering your cough and washing your hands with soap and water. In the absence of soap and water a hand sanitizer is an alternative.

Students traveling to Canada should exercise caution, but the World Health Organization (WHO) advises no restriction of regular travel. http://www.who.int/en/ The province of Manitoba and local health authorities are taking all precautions to restrict the spread of the virus and monitor any developments.

Please contact us if you have concerns or need more information.
